There are many things to do and remember when starting a new business. It is like a complex recipe with more than 100 materials, no two people will follow the recipe the same way. In fact, there are many variations of the recipe as well, depending on the type of business you start and where you live.
Here are some common things that all businesses will do.
1. Specify a name for your business
Simple business name only your name and your products. For example, Bob’s Burgers or Laundromat Henry. This is a good approach, when you’re little, it results in the business name associated with your person, and can work for large companies as well (think Wal-Mart or Ford Motor Company). This species is informative names. Then there is an abstract name, or name that indicates the meaning. Consider Oracle, the world’s largest database companies. The “oracle” is the traditional sense is a good person to tell the future, or give wise advice. That’s a big name for a software company’s flagship product is about information storage and retrieval. Twitter is another name that calls the image of birds singing. You can make the words in the name of your business, too.
Make your business name flexible. If you call yourself “Farmtown Oil Change”, what if you grow your business elsewhere, or expand your services to include transmission and brake service? Customers who only see the name you might not know you have a location in another area, or that your car is a comprehensive repair service.
Much consideration has been given, if the domain name available for the business name, especially in the.com TLD. This is because consumers naturally will first look for business on the internet with the.com extension at the end. This can be a topic of debate, whether you want to choose a name if the domain names are taken, but the greater concern is whether you’ll probably end up violating trademarks, or confuse yourself with other businesses.
2. Figuring out how to reach and communicate with your customers
Businesses will typically need to find ways to reach their customers both for purposes of marketing and product development. Imagine you are forming a local bakery. What kind of bread that you aim to be? Are you the main bakery that traffic will come from walk-in customers who happened to walk by your storefront, or you want to serve primarily catering or call-in orders? “All of the above”, you might say. Everyone wants to be all over, and get every type of customer, but maybe you want to focus on the type of customer. If your caterer, you will want to market themselves not only to customers directly, but also wedding planners, caterers, and other bakery may not be able to handle higher volumes. In addition, real estate agent or PTA may need your services. Maybe a local restaurant. This type of marketing channel may or may not be different than the channel for retail customers. Marketing messages in these channels may be different.
As far as customer research, today online is one of the best ways to find out what customers want. Twitter, along with Facebook, and a myriad of blogs and forums allow business owners to know the customer desires. One key thing about finding out what customers want is to not ignore what you do not want to hear. You may notice that the solution you offer is being criticized, or will not meet your market needs. This is invaluable when starting a new business.
Doing small ads running online will also help you gauge customer reaction to your idea. Sales channels though, has a lot of detours. You will need a compelling ad clicks, web pages are correct and explain the benefits of the market, and the site work and link all of them. All these are points of failure that has nothing to do with the actual service or product marketing. The point is to make sure that you put your best foot forward so that the reaction you get is to measure what you want.
3. Self-regulating and Business Administration
Business owners always have an incomplete list of things to accomplish, along with new ideas in their heads, plus the customer’s problem to solve. Getting organized early when starting a new business can help you facilitate your business activities and clear up your mind to focus on more important business issues. Organization is the overhead. It does not directly contribute to bottom line business, but lack of organization can hamper your efforts.
For some owners, the organization is not a problem. They are naturally attracted to the list, write, and logging the details of their operations. For those who have trouble getting organized, I would suggest to take the slow changes in behavior, or see if you can hire someone to help with the organization.
It is not necessary to have tracking software or management time to get your business organized. Big business there are a hundred years ago before the computer was invented. However, you want to ensure your operational efficiency is up to par with your competitors. The part that you have for your business, communication again you need to do it effectively.
For small organizations, start with a well-known methods such as Getting Things Done by David Allen. This is a method, a very well known to modern productivity. There are other similar books in the field. For project management tools or products, tools such as Basecamp paid, as well as free software such as Trac or Redmine available.
In addition to naming, marketing, and organization, people starting new businesses face many challenges and requirements. Businesses should always remember the goal, and take the approach of just-in-time to solve the problem to remain efficient
